| Mexiletine and thalamic pain syndromeChinese Medicine has been used to treat breast cancer for over 2000 years. Though their terminology was different, Chinese practitioners were well acquainted with the history of the disease and would use different approaches for different stages. Isaac Cohen, a doctor of Oriental Medicine and a licensed Acupuncturist and Herbalist, has treated patients with breast cancer for over fifteen years. Five years ago, he and Mary Tagliaferri, a licensed acupuncturist and breast cancer survivor, teamed up with BCC oncologist Debu Tripathy and UCSF biologist Michael Campbell to spearhead a program researching the clinical benefits of traditional Chinese herbal medicine.

No additional hydatid lesions were detected in the liver or any other site during the follow-up period.

This produced marked tactile allodynia and mechanical hyperalgesia, which were inhibited by oral gabapentin without effects on gross behaviors. While HERG K + channels are sensitive to many class III antiarrhythmic drugs, they are also targets of many drugs that can induce arrhythmia and sudden cardiac death. Mexiletind is a Na channel blocker that has been used for the treatment of cardiac arrhythmias and a variety of neuropathic pain syndromes. We investigated the effects of mexiletine on HERG K + channels expressed in CHO cells using the whole-cell patch-clamp technique. Mexlietine produced a concentrationdependent and rapidly reversible inhibition of HERG K + current with an IC50 of 5.21.1 M, when tail currents were elicited on repolarization from + 50 mV -30 mV. The degree of inhibition of the tail current was voltage-dependent with greater blockade at positive potentials. Our results suggest that mexiletine inhibits HERG K + currents by interacting preferentially with activated channels but that it dissociates rapidly upon membrane repolarization. This is the first study demonstrating that mexiletine blocks HERG potassium channels, suggesting that in addition to its class I antiarrhythmic effects, mexiletine could produce its therapeutic efficacy by acting as a class III antiarrhythmic drug and micardis.
